Excess Weight Increases Cancer Risk

Unfortunately, it probably comes as a surprise to most people to find that a balanced diet, a moderate amount of exercise and maintaining optimum weight can prevent approximately 33% of cancers.

Overweight and obesity is directly related to breast cancer, bowel cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, as well as cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx. Even esophageal, endometrial, and skin cancers are correlated with excessive body fat.

A recent survey by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) shows that 50% of all people are not aware that being overweight directly contributes to causing cancer. Research has shown that fat cells produce and release hormones and intermediates that directly interact in cellular life-cycles. “We still have a long way to go in terms of getting across the message that people can make a real difference to their cancer risk,” says Lisa Cooney, head of education for the WCRF. “Scientists now believe that after not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight is the most important step you can take to reduce cancer risk.”
