Unfortunately, it probably
comes as a surprise to most people to find that a balanced diet, a moderate
amount of exercise and maintaining optimum weight can prevent approximately 33%
of cancers.
Overweight and obesity is directly related to breast cancer, bowel cancer,
prostate cancer, bladder cancer, as well as cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and
larynx. Even esophageal, endometrial, and skin cancers are correlated with
excessive body fat.
A recent survey by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) shows that 50% of all
people are not aware that being overweight directly contributes to causing
cancer. Research has shown that fat cells produce and release hormones and
intermediates that
directly interact in cellular life-cycles. “We still have a long way to go in
terms of getting across the message that people can make a real difference to
their cancer risk,” says Lisa Cooney, head of education for the WCRF.
“Scientists now believe that after not smoking, maintaining a healthy body
weight is the most important step you can take to reduce cancer risk.”
This is why your Personal Trainer not only provides proper exercise information,
but also educational information about proper diet, nutrition, and lifestyle
habits that take place outside of your training session that have a direct
effect on your overall health and well-being.
More Benefits of Exercise Besides Weight Loss
Researchers at Harvard say
that strenuous exercise results in a 50% decrease in depressive symptoms; the
same effective relief that patients achieve with the leading antidepressant
medications and psychotherapy.
Additional benefits of regular exercise as cited in the study are good feelings
from camaraderie and removing the focus from other life-problems. Combined with
research that suggests a possible boost in the growth of brain cells and the
connections between them, it is surprising that more people are not exercising.
This is even more evident considering the number of other patients that can
“treat” diseases or symptoms of disease with exercise as well. Arthritis for
instance, will not be cured by exercise, but studies show that losing just 5.7%
of body weight can have a beneficial effect on pain and increase mobility.
When hypertension is first diagnosed, patients and doctors turn to drugs.
However, mild increases in blood pressure can be effectively treated with
exercise, weight loss, salt reduction and dietary changes. Even the simple
addition of calcium, potassium, and magnesium combines to relax constricted
blood vessels and combat hypertension.
In addition to hypertension therapy, an increasing number of patients are taking
drugs to decrease the effects of osteoporosis. And just like with hypertension,
the severity of many osteoporosis cases can be reduced by regular exercise and
proper diet. For optimal health, weight bearing exercise and resistance training
should be accompanied by adequate vitamin D and calcium.
Above all, the fact that exercise is the prime mode of battling the epidemics of
obesity and diabetes must be accepted. According to authors, exercise can
completely turn around one’s health when combined with responsible eating.

As owner, manager and head trainer of Fitness Together - Temecula,
I have found that there is nothing more rewarding than helping my clients reach
their personal fitness goals. It goes far beyond helping them to lose weight and
feel better about themselves. I have seen lives completely changed when clients
learn and apply proper nutrition and exercise to their lifestyles.
No one I know has ever regretted losing weight and getting in better shape. The
improvements and enjoyment that clients experience in their daily lives as a
result of their personal training is why I do this. I may work with each client
less than an hour a day, but I known they are enjoying the benefits of their
improved energy, health and fitness all day long -- and that's what its all
about. Without your health, nothing else matters.

Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines
practiced every day, while failure is simply a few errors in judgment repeated
every day. It is the accumulated weight of our disciplines and our judgments
that leads us to either success or failure.
Health Trivia
The average adult will
stand around 0.5 inches taller in the morning than in the evening due the slight
cartilage compression that happens over the course of a day.
